Jewellery Tips & Care
Treating jewellery with care can make it lasts for generations.
We recommend removing your jewellery before washing your hands, showering, sleeping, putting on lotion, gardening, and any other hands-on jobs to maintain and protect your pieces as best as possible. Avoid wearing gemstone jewellery in hot tubs or in natural hot springs. Stones such as opals and turquoise, as well as pearls, are especially sensitive.
A combination of mild soap, warm water, and a soft toothbrush may be used for cleaning your jewellery. Let your jewellery soak in a mild soapy solution for a few minutes (do not soak turquoise) and then scrub gently around stones, settings, clasps etc. with a soft toothbrush. Rinse clean with cold water and pat dry with a soft cloth. Polishing cloths and liquid polish which can be purchased at many jewellery stores may also be used, just make sure to follow the instructions carefully as chemical cleaners can be damaging to some stones, such as turquoise, opal and pearls. If silver has been oxidised (blackened) as part of the design, be sure not to use store bought liquid cleaners, rather soapy water and toothbrush to clean off dirt, lotion, etc.
Sterling & Fine Silver
Silver keeps a bright state when worn regularly. Over time, silver tarnishes if it is kept out. How quickly silver tarnishes can vary, depending on where you live - the ocean, humidity etc. The best way to keep silver from tarnishing, when it isn’t being worn, is to keep it in a sealed plastic bag. Where we live, in Iceland, there can be a lot of sulphur in the hot water, so we highly recommend removing your silver jewellery before taking a shower, going to the pools or hot springs. Soft polishing cloths or simple silver polish can be used to remove tarnish.
14k Gold Fill
Gold fill is made from 14k gold that is heat bonded to a core of jeweller’s brass, resulting in a durable, quality real gold product. Gold fill legally requires 1/20th, or 5% pure gold by weight. It will not flake like gold plate. The finish and surface of gold fill has the same properties of solid gold because it is gold. Care for gold fill the same way you would gold, polish gently by hand with a soft cloth.
